Love is in the air so why not take advantage of what the picturesque Sanbis Resort has to offer. If you are looking for a truly romantic getaway, or an adventure weekend, this resort I can definitely recommend.
Here are few tips from my firsthand experience at this resort. When my friends were telling me about it, I still could not envisage the place. Hopefully my photos will help you see what you are searching for. Remember though, you are the character of your own book. The place can be so enchanting but without the right frame of mind, the beauty of nature might escape you completely.
My husband surprised me with a romantic getaway. He told me two days before we travelled to this resort. How wonderful when husbands surprise their wives! Although I’m not very good with surprises, I get frantic about what to pack and what to take.
What do you think I packed first? Bottles of our favourite bubbly, in our case French champagne. You need champagne for a romantic getaway don’t you? I knew Moet would not be available on the island. Here is something you shouldn’t forget – bring boxes of mosquito coils. Mosquitos are ferocious at this place.
HOW TO GET THERE
From Honiara domestic airport we flew in a small plane and landed at Nusatupe (Gizo) airport. From the airport there was a guy waiting to take us by boat to Sanbis Resort. He wasn’t carrying any sign with our names on it so we were a bit worried but my husband spotted the Sanbis logo on his black uniform shirt so we approached him.
I was so excited coming out of the airport. The guy escorted us right at the back of the airport terminal. The weather was fantastic when we arrived and the water was really blue. I was looking for a presentable boat because my husband said, judging from the prices this is a five star resort. No I haven’t seen a small luxury boat. Reality bites yes, indeed we are riding a banana boat, so we were exposed to the sun. Luckily it was a short 10 minutes ride only.
Seeing the resort from the distance was spectacular. I love the layout. I was amazed at the mermaid statue in the water in front of the resort. When we arrived they gave us this refreshing coconut drink and asked to sit and relax at the restaurant. I was so excited so I started to look around and took a lot of photos. Looking down, the water around the restaurant was crystal clear. I saw schools of fish everywhere. I just wanted to jump right in but the water was too deep.
There was no proper reception area at this resort. We weren’t told of any information at all. We didn’t know what to expect and what they were offering. It would have been nice to have a little bit of a briefing or to be given some information on what activities they are offering. Nevertheless everyone was friendly and helpful.
After a few minutes, one waitress escorted us to our bungalow. We passed this long boardwalk then passed another restaurant.
A short walk from the restaurant was our bungalow. It was surrounded by green plants and I loved that the proximity to the other bungalows wasn’t very close for privacy. Our bungalow was nested at the edge of the water.
Our bungalow was spacious. We had a king bed and it was great that a mosquito net was provided for us too. Behind this room was the bathroom. There is no need for you to bring towels as they provided us with four towels every day. Shampoo and soap were also provided but they were previously used by other guests. Luckily I had brought my own soap and shampoo.
They provided coffee, powdered milk, sugar and biscuits and a thermos of boiling water which they replenish through the day. I can’t reiterate enough how friendly the staff are at this place. We arrived and I felt like having coffee only to find out the water at the thermos was warm but not hot. They replaced it straight away and ensured we had always hot water for coffee throughout the rest of our stay at their resort.
WHAT TO DO AT THE RESORT
We simply enjoyed the resort and spent a bit of time on the deck having coffee, enjoying champagne, reading and watching the sunset. We are both very keen photographers so we were always on the lookout for any subject to photograph.
Apart from that, you might want to walk around the island, you can walk to Fatboys Resort or play volleyball, or simply enjoy the pizza at the front sea view restaurant. It is a must to try their pizza. I definitely recommend it. You have to choose your own filling and we had chosen the lot with lots of lobsters meat. It was so divine.
I saw others leaving everyday for scuba diving trips but snorkelling at this place was great even for someone like myself who is not a strong swimmer. I stayed and swam around for so long. I just didn’t want to stop. I was in a world of my own.
This was the highlight of our getaway. My husband informed them when he did the booking that he wanted to book the wharf for a romantic dinner. The second night after we arrived, we reminded them that we wanted dinner on the wharf. They asked what we wanted to eat and we set the time when we wanted to have the meal.
At sunset we were ready and walked to the wharf. It was astonishing what they did. It was a truly romantic dinner with candle lights, we had chilled champagne, flowers everywhere and the set up was like a real wedding. Some of the guests thought we had just got married. It was a perfect night with perfect meal. Thank goodness we also jazzed it up that night wearing our best attire for the occasion. So boys out there if you want to impress your wife or partner this is the place to be but you must arrange it in advance to give them the chance to prepare.
After two days of being in the resort we were looking for more things to do. In every tropical resort I have been too they were always offering island hopping so we approached the guy from the dive shop located at the side of Sanbis restaurant. “Yes indeed” he told us they have another private island and they can arrange to get us there for additional charges including BBQ food.
Another romantic interlude with my husband castaway on a private island. It was a short boat ride from the Sanbis Resort, passing Fatboys Resort enroute. The guy prepared everything for us, he started the fire for the BBQ and left the two of us there. The little island was nice with a little bit of white sand beach. My husband snorkelled around and saw some sharks. There were branches of trees around the beach area which provided some shade when I was swimming so I didn’t get burned as much as my husband.
They were so generous with their BBQ meat especially lobster. My husband cooked the BBQ and we had so much left over that they heated it for us for dinner. Again, what excellent customer service from the staff.
They have a shuttle that goes to Gizo town twice a day and we caught the 10:00am boat. We didn’t do much in Gizo, just walked around the main street. There is Gizo Hotel if you want cold beer and a place to have lunch. There is Telecom mobile service in Gizo, which was nice as we were able to log on to our social media page for updates. There is also a bank, a bottle store and even a branch of the Bulk Shop that we have seen. They have something that Honiara does not have – a cinema!
