Bamboo Café – Freshly Grated Coconut Fish ‘n’ Chips

Bamboo Café is an institution of Honiara; it is centrally located, has a lovely garden entrance and has traditional and beautiful décor inside. It is peaceful and quiet without the hustle and bustle that permeates the rest of Honiara. The staff were attentive and the fish ‘n’ chips were nicely proportioned, well presented and, had a good serve of both fish and chips, and a small accompanying salad.
The fish was cooked in a delightfully crunchy coconut crumb. Both the crumb and the fish was of a nice colour and there was an enjoyable aroma coming from the coconut crumb. The fishes texture varied from succulent to at times a little dry, but overall it was yummy and had no overwhelming tastes, everything fused together nicely. The addition of a slice of lime went very well with the fish and was a great condiment to have instead of tartar sauce, which was not required and would have overpowered the other flavours.
The chips served as a large bed for the fish. They varied between crunchy and a little soggy, so no matter how you like your chips, there was a chip for every one’s preference. The chips were similar to French Fries but a little fatter, unsalted (but salt was provided on the table) and not drenched in oil. They were perhaps not as hot as they could have been but as Bamboo is very well air-conditioned this may have been my fault for focusing on the fish for too long. Two sachets of Big Red tomato sauce were provided, maybe one more would have been good, but this is a very petty complaint of the reviewer.
The salad was simple, crisp and refreshing. It provided a nice balance to the chips. It was comprised of carrots, capsicum, lettuce and cabbage. Well at least the cabbage was cabbage; it is what I am calling it as I have no idea what it actually was. But if it’s green Solomon Islanders call it cabbage. Good enough for them, good enough for us expats.
I would definitely have it again. It was filling, yet light. With the coconut crumb, it felt like a step above regular fish ‘n’ chips.
