April update by Jobby Vulita and Rowan Fajerman

This year is shaping up to be an exciting year for footy in the Solomon’s with International competitions for both senior and junior teams, a host of junior development programs and various AFL events taking place throughout the year. To stay updated with all the AFL news in the Solomon’s, be sure to read SIAFL’s new monthly newsletter: Around the Boundary and check Solomon Star for weekly updates on senior and junior footy.

Latest News – New Volunteer Arrives

Rowan Fajerman, who arrived in early February, is the new AFL Development Officer from the Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development (AYAD) volunteer program. He will be working with Jobby Vulita, continuing to develop the game of AFL in Solomon’s and help to create sustainable programs for the future. Rowan will be based in Honiara for 12 months. He has a background in Health and Physical Education and has also worked as an AFL Development Officer in New South Wales. He is keen and passionate about the sport and is looking forward to working with SIAFL staff in promoting the game.

Solkick & Junior Development

SIAFLF staff have been conducting Solkick clinics at Primary and Secondary Schools around Honiara. This term, AFL will be running clinics and sessions at St Nicholas, St Josephs, and Kukum SDA Primary School for both primary and secondary aged youths. Numbers have been strong and it is exciting to see the willingness and eagerness of students to learn a new game and new skills. SIAFLF will be looking to conduct a Primary School Competition at the end of the term.

There is also an open Solkick clinic at Woodford Oval on Saturdays at 8:30am. We always welcome new participants. Anyone can participate and we encourage parents to come along and join in the fun too.

During term 4 last year, SIAFL staff and volunteers travelled to Malaita for one week and conducted Solkick Clinics at seven different communities. SIAFL would like to thank those communities for their support and help in organising the clinics and providing the kids with the opportunity to experience AFL. During their stay, a senior match was also held between Honiara Sons and Malaita Hawks. The more experienced Sons were too strong for the Hawks who won by a big margin. The game however, was played in good spirit and the Malaita Hawks are looking forward to the next Sons tour.

Senior Footy

Several local clubs have begun training for the upcoming AFL Season which is set to kick off on Thursday 27th March. For the first time in SIAFL’s history, there will be a cash prize up for grabs to be split between the finalists. This year will also see the induction of a fifth club – the Real Lions. There will be no bye’s though, instead, each week one team will play two games: Thursday afternoon and the later game on Saturday afternoons. The Final’s format is yet to be decided and will be released in the coming weeks. Trainings are currently being held at White River School on Mondays and Wednesdays at 4:30pm and KG Oval on Mondays and Wednesdays at 4:00pm. All players, new and old are welcome to join in.

The 2014 International Cup tournament will be held in Melbourne later in the year. Currently, SIAFL is aiming to send a full squad of players and staff to the tournament but is seeking sponsorship and funding. Unfortunately, without adequate support, we will be unable to send a team. Those interested in sponsoring or supporting the team and the development of AFL in Solomon’s are encouraged to contact SIAFL.

Good News

Two of Solomon’s most talented young players have been giving a fantastic opportunity the travel to Australia and complete a season with Coolaroo Football Club. In the coming weeks, Francis Ramo and Peter Nuku will fly to Queensland and begin their Aussie Football experience. Both boys have demonstrated excellent leadership and commitment to their footy as well as AFL development. SIAFLF would like to thank Shaun Johnson and Dave Challenor for their generosity and and work in enabling Peter and Francis to travel to Australia. We wish them all the best.
